TR1 gets a boost for starting it all but I slightly prefer the immediate sequels.

Despite too much combat I think TR2 is still the most rounded, plus Barkhang Monastery+Temple of Xian are straight up the best levels in the series and some of the best of all time. In order for the rest (and seeing aside that I wouldn't consider LAU "classic"): TR2 and TR1+Anniversary come near equally behind. As much as I love some of the other games, and think they're consistently better in many ways, TR3 is what truly hooked me on the potential of the series and genre, and led to the perpetual frustration of seeing nothing even come close to exploring it since. They turned it up to 12 for everything, which frequently falters but also creates things I feel very little else in the genre has even come close to. I could write a book on all it's problems, but I could also do so for how brilliant I consider certain parts. I'm in a minority who believes Tomb Raider Underworld came closest to recreating the magic of the Core games. I despise all the Crystal Dynamics games, ESPECIALLY Tomb Raider Anniversary. Newcomers found it mindboggingly difficult, and it was even worse on PSOne where there were limited saves.ĭespite all that, I do consider Tomb Raider to be the most atmospheric of the games.

It's not just that the levels are enormous and complex, it's that the game is deliberately to kill people over and over again, forcing a trial and error gameplay experience that I find frustrating even for a seasoned player. I still love Tomb Raider 3 and it has tons going for it, but I've come to realise the game is too difficult for it's own good.
It has great and varied locales, excellent level design and while remaining tough, it represents a fair challenge. Nowadays my ranking is quite different and I consider 2 to be the best in the entire saga. Back then I adored the original Tomb Raider, was somewhat lukewarm on 2 and felt that Tomb Raider 3 was the best of the bunch.
My feelings on the original trilogy have changed quite a bit from when I was younger.
