Its folder based so you can just browse your media in one window. Update each app individually, or click 'Update All' to install all available updates. I understand that "a solution" is to simply remember to use the TAB key vs the ENTER key, however, in my 25+ years using Macs and Preview, that "solution" has never stuck behaviorally, because my muscle memory is far stronger and more deeply reinforced by an exponentially larger number of Finder file list rename operations where one types the new name and hits ENTER to execute the rename. Phiewer is the easiest and fastest way to view your images, videos and even audio files. Same behavior for opened TEXT DOCs as well. If I hit ENTER, the filename is not changed. If iPhoto needs updating, you cannot use it anyway on High Sierra and you cannot update it yourself. Look in your Application folder, if you are seeing iPhoto there and delete it and empty the Trash. Use the tools in the toolbar to mark up the image (or use the Touch Bar ). Even if you are now using and running Photos for Mac, there may be still iPhoto installed on your Mac and ask to be updated. When trying to rename an open PREVIEW image file by typing a new filename directly into the name field at the very top of the Toolbar's Name field, the only way I can execute that name change is by hitting TAB KEY vs the ENTER key. In the Preview app on your Mac, click the Show Markup Toolbar button (if the Markup toolbar isn’t showing). Then you can export all photos from the new library with 'File > Export > Export unmodified Original' and save them to your main Photos Library.
I've been wanting to figure this out for years. The Photos from iCloud will download to your Mac, without uploading all photos from your Mac library to iCloud.
